happydaze are a pop-punk band from Edinburgh, Scotland. Formed in 2020, they have been releasing music consistently over the last 4 years. The band signed to Thriller Records in 2021 and released their debut EP Underground Summer Sound in early 2022. They spent the year touring the UK and Europe with Neck Deep, Boston Manor, Higher Power, and ROAM. 2023 saw the release of their second EP Full Free Radical, as well as singles Been and Gone, Piece Of Me and Inside Out, which saw the band lean into the more alternative side of Pop-Punk whilst staying true to their roots. The record was given amazing support on Pop Punk's Not Dead, The Locker, All New Punk, Scotify and more, as well as being spun regularly on BBC Radio 1.
The band followed these releases with shows and festivals around the country, including Scottish tour dates with The XCERTS and a live performance for BBC Introducing. 2024 sees happydaze releasing singles Left Off and touring the UK with Trophy Eyes, followed by their brand new single Way Out and another UK tour with The Dangerous Summer and Broadside.

After a long period away from the gig scene due to band member's busy commitments to other musical projects, The Fergus Quill Trio are returning for a live show in Leeds at Hyde Park Book Club on February 16th with a brand new sound. This time, they're exploring the organ jazz trio format but with a difference. The obvious influence of modern jazz organ legend Jimmy Smith is here but funneled through the prism of Leeds LS6 wonkiness.
The trio will be presenting new compositions, which they plan to record this year for their third album, and will be joined by special guests in the evening. As always, the trio are : Fergus Quill - bass (and tuba for this gig), Nico Widdowson - keys (and B3 Hammond organ for this gig), Theo Goss - drums.
Fergus has been fascinated by the organ sound since he was a child and was obsessed with the music of soul organ legend Booker T. Jones and his band The MGs. As he progressed to playing jazz, Fergus discovered the classic modern jazz organ sound and the musicians championing it - Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott, Brother Jack McDuff, Larry Young. As Leeds' number one Sun Ra fan, Fergus has always appreciated the cosmic jazz legend's organ playing on such albums as "Church Organ" (a 1948 recording of him playing jazz standards on an actual church organ), and "Excelsior Mill" (a 1980s live recording featuring Sun Ra solo playing a Wurlitzer organ).
Tonight, the trio will present a night of organ led jazz music but not as we know it.....come prepared for something a little bit off-kilter, Fergus Quill style.
Fergus Quill is one of Leeds' best known jazz/experimental music artists. Musician, composer, arranger, bandleader. Arriving in Leeds around 2015 to study at Leeds College Of Music, he quickly established himself on the local scene as a member of the Tight Lines music collective, playing with their lead band Skwid Ink. At the same time, he was also a member of NYJO, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2019, he began releasing original music and reimagined works by others under his own name.
Since 2019, he has released six albums under his name via various line-ups.
Fergus Quill's Electric Noise Ensemble (self-release 2019 - cassette)
"Zoop Zoop" - The Fergus Quill Trio (Tight Lines Records 2020 - digital)
"Blamo!" - The Fergus Quill Trio (Tight Lines Records 2022 - digital)
Ferg's Imaginary Big Band (Tight Lines Records Feb 2023 - digital/vinyl)
"Up Yours! Fergus Quill Plays Xero Slingsby" (Nov 2023 - digital)
"Live At Lancaster Jazz Festival" Ferg's Imaginary Big Band (Dec 2024 - digital/vinyl)
In the last few years, Fergus has won awards as a musician and composer, including the Musicians Company/Tina May Award 2022 for best young musician, and the Peter Whittington/Help Musicians Jazz Award 2023 for Ferg's Imaginary Big Band.
The Fergus Quill Trio also features original band members Nico Widdowson (piano/keys) and drummer Theo Goss. Both are longtime members of Ferg's Imaginary Big Band and have been at the centre of the Leeds jazz scene for almost a decade now in various bands. Nico, now living in London, has been running his own jazz trio for several years as well as Mabgate (originally the Mabgate Organ Trio), and in 2024, he also won the Musicians Company/Tina May Award for best young musician. Drummer Theo Goss is a member of Ghanaian singer/musician K.O.G's band and tours the UK/Europe with the artist. He recently appeared on "Later With Jools Holland" on BBC2 with K.O.G and is also a longtime member of Leeds bands Slow Lorris and the Ben Haskins Quartet.
Support tonight comes from the next generation of rising Leeds jazz stars and features one of the busiest drummers in the current buzzing Leeds DIY/alt-jazz scene. Billy Goulding plays drums with bands like Nova.sol, Afrodesia, Nathaniel Taberner Quartet and the Charlie Folland Quintet. He's now striking out on his own and leading a band under his own name....the Billy Goulding Quartet. They play fiery post-bop/modal/spiritual jazz inspired by past and present greats such as John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Kamasi Washington. Billy is joined onstage by Conrad Clenton - sax, Umer Sair - piano, and Sean Blake - double bass.
Doors 7.30pm. Billy Goulding Quartet 8pm. Fergus Quill Trio & Guests 9pm. Live music over 10.30pm. Curfew 11pm.

Inspired by the likes of Laura Marling, Adrienne Lenker, Radiohead and Neil Young, singer-songwriter Zoe Cure tethers herself to the world through song at its most intimate and imperfect best. After quietly cultivating her sound for many years, the release of her debut single in September 2021 was the result of a slow growth into confidence and a willingness to find strength in vulnerability. With delicately deep vocals, haunting melodies and lyrics that ache, her artfully crafted songs explore all things felt and invisible; from universal grief to personal joy and the spaces therein.

Dutch Criminal Record are an indie surf band from Chichester on the south coast of the UK, whose signature sound is guitar-driven, energetic, and packed with nostalgia. Consisting of Joe Delaney-Stone (vocals, guitar), Sam Thrussell (vocals, guitar), and Joe Frampton (drums), they take influence from '60s giants' pop vocals while lacing each track with narratives of living in 21st-century Britain with blooming harmonies and dreamy instrumentation.
DCR have unveiled their gorgeous debut album ‘Novium’. Translated from the Latin for ‘Chichester’ (the band’s hometown), ‘Novium’ represents a culmination of all that the band have achieved up until this point and an opportunity to reflect on their roots and admire the growth. Known for their infectious melodies, glossy guitar chords and vibrant live energy, DCR offer a sun-soaked debut album that blends nostalgic indie surf vibes with a psychedelic, Gen Z twist. The DCR boys conceived the album as a love letter to themselves and we invite you to join in on the romance.
‘Novium’ manages to embody heart-melting moments of indie pop and glorious crescendos of shoegaze-y rock, taking the listener through a sonic journey through the highs and lows of growing up, affection and self-appreciation. Jam-packed full of tunes designed to crank the volume up and roll the car window down, ‘Novium’ is an irresistibly catchy coming-of-age album, shining with captivating energy that Dutch Criminal Record are proud to share after years of hard graft.

Tandanya/Adelaide-based post-punk six piece Coldwave have announced their debut UK tour this February and March 2025 which will be followed by their showcase at SXSW. Off the back of extensive media support from the likes of Stereogum, Clash Magazine and Rolling Stone Australia for their recent two track The Ants / Italia '06 this tour will be the UK's first live introduction to Coldwave's captivating post-punk accelerant.
The tour will begin on February 27th at Castle Hotel in Manchester and will see the band play eight shows, including supporting Pom Poko in London at The Garage. They will continue their run of must-see showcases on March 10th - 15th playing at SXSW Austin, which will build on their previous performances at SXSW Sydney and BIGSOUND.
Alongside the tour announcement Coldwave have also shared an explosive live video for Italia '06 which sees the band leaning into a frantic yet tightly controlled blend of jagged guitars, booming horns and uncompromising vocal delivery. With an added percussionist and saxophonist and band members running between instruments the song builds from a play on negative space and spoken word, before the aural spike strip is laid down and explodes in the second half.
Following the release of their debut EP Same Window, Different House in 2023, Coldwave were named triple j Unearthed Feature Artist, performed at Laneway Festival amongst a stacked lineup including Turnstile and Fontaines D.C., and made their much-talked-about debut at Bigsound 2023, with Dave Ruby Howe applauding the band for “delivering heavily to a big room which seemed to have caught wind that something was cooking... every member of the band vying for your eyes with intense noodling, rumbling rhythm section and demonic trumpet.”
COLDWAVE - Harrison Evans (he/him; vocals), Kiran Memisoglou (he/him; guitar), Anthony Griffin (he/him; guitar/vocals), Sean McGowan (they/them; trumpet/synth/vocals), Lara Patzel (she/they; bass) and Jordan Maywald (he/him; drums) - formed in 2020 from the ashes of two beloved Tandanya/Adelaide post-punk outfits and have continued to evolve rapidly, welcoming new collaborators, exploring experimental instrumentation, and building a national audience, while remaining steadfastly loyal to their home community. They have released two EPs No Conflict (2023), Same Window, Different House (2023) and have performed with Citizen, Pond, RVG and more.

Joshua Burnside is an experimental folk songwriter, singer and producer. He takes influence from alternative electronica and Irish folk, chopping and blending them with a mixture of found sounds, world music and unorthodox production methods. Following an award-winning debut album and an acclaimed follow-up released during the height of the global pandemic, his music lives against the grain, in both style and spirit. Raised in the north of Ireland between the lush drumlins and hills of Strangford Lough, and the narrow entries and alleyways of East Belfast, Joshua’s music has defined and defied the post-conflict society of his home.
Taking in the economics of existence, family, trauma and renewal, while set against a backdrop of tense electronica and lush Irish folk and traditional songwriting, Joshua has entrenched himself within the fabric of the modern folk canon, alongside the likes of Bon Iver, Ben Howard and Sufjan Stevens. While his award-winning first album Ephrata took in lush landscapes, technological horrors, night terrors and wistful Columbian vistas (set against a bed of Irish folk, cumbia rhythms, and electronica), his critically acclaimed second Into The Depths Of Hell, took a far darker approach. Melding swirls of clanging metallic found sounds, alt-rock, and Irish songwriting traditions were supported by UK and US national radio and international tastemakers NPR, Guitar Magazine, CLASH, The Guardian, The Times and more.
His third album, Teeth Of Time, sits comfortably and confrontationally between the alt-folk realms of Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens while retaining the indie singer-songwriter and traditional folk elements of Josh's signature songwriting.

Will this be a fair fight? Two musical heavyweights go head to head in a sound-clash at The Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds. In one corner, the immense Shoun Shoun, the Bristol Butchers. And in the other, Satan'S Baby trading blows for the baying audience.
Shoun Shoun ('shoon-shoon')
No wave. No logic. Somewhere between art rock and electronica. Using broken technology to make very human moments, Annette’s songs take sharp, twisted routes making your feet move one way and your head in very much another. Stuttering drums, liquid sex bass, post punk squonk and sporadic noise constitute a sound like no other.
Early 2025 will be spent recording their 2nd album, continuing their push into the North, as well as returning to Europe to bend some ears.
"The range on show has no limits for this quartet... This is an album that tilts on the pinpoint of intrigue and innovation, providing mystery in the direction they may take, a new layer is introduced and the sound diverts in an instant to begin the journey again... the perfect breeding ground for a new immense sound" Noizze
"Rather than just rely on raw power they have moulded their sound into something stylish and intelligent and I could easily see them playing a set at the Tate Modern or MOMA." JOYZINE
Satan's Baby
2 piece Satan’s Baby play a blend of heavy psych rock, doom folk and hypnotic grooves, all presented with a hint of dry English humour and bonhomie.
Amidst the head nodding riffs, melodies and tales of modern folklore, their shows are full of audience interaction and infectious joy. From fronting major label NME darlings Chikinki, to singing traditional English ballads round the folk club circuits, Satan’s baby’s Vincent Whenever has had quite a trip. Transitioning from bass to drums following a stint with reptile rockers Starken, self-taught DaveRock has developed a unique and expressive style that grooves with metronomic intent and quirkiness
Both interested in marrying the storytelling and melodies learned from ancient ballads to fuzz pedal full throttle rock, “Satans Baby have all the drive and frenzy you could wish for in this day and age.. a version of Cream without eric clapton, playing a mix of psyche folk and minimal grunge of the hotel room songs of the stooges first LP.”

Longtime Leeds jazz music promoter Lubi Jovanovic (DJ Lubi) continues his monthly Hyde Park Book Club residency in March with a night of cosmic jazz mayhem and assorted musical cacophony. Amon Ra Collective finally play the rescheduled date for their cancelled summer 2024 show, a welcome hometown gig as part of their spring UK tour.
Space faring Leeds-based cosmic jazz ensemble Amon Ra Collective are a large community of over 20 members who have been appearing at live shows around the city for the past 3 years in different combinations of between 2-15 people. Led by trumpeter Samuel Ehret-Pickett, they play an exciting fusion of energetic solos, pulsating rhythms, electronic noise, free improvisation incorporating the Butch Morris' Conduction method. Inspired by the music of Miles Davis’ electric jazz fusion, John Coltrane’s avant garde jazz, the ethio-jazz of Mulatu Astatke, and the spiritual world music of Don Cherry, they bring together jazz, rock, world music, afrobeat, drum & bass and cosmic funk into one big Amon Ra musical melting pot.
They released their debut album "At The Centre Of Everything" in autumn 2023 through Lamplight Social Records (the label run by Roller Trio saxophonist James Mainwaring), and now their music is available beyond the Leeds city limits. Musicians from Amon Ra Collective are part of the vibrant Leeds jazz scene belonging to groups such as Fergus Quill’s Imaginary Big Band, Ancient Infinity Orchestra (Gondwana Records), Nika Ticciati’s Cataclysm Ensemble, Afrodesia, Nova.Sol and Rushbonds. Tonight, the bigger ensemble (as seen at their album launch in autumn 2023), will be performing at Hyde Park Book Club.
“Amon Ra channel Sun Ra into now and beyond with their cosmic blend of free-jazz and heavy grooves” - Fusebox
“Bleeping synths, treacly bass, atonal reverberating horns and intense percussion suggest a restless, inquisitive spirit” - furtherdot.com
“This UK- based group exhibits a Magma / Zeuhl influence influence in its bass lines and keyboard tone, but an electric Miles feel with the inclusion of trumpet” - Avant Music News
Oracle are a 7 piece high energy, new wave jazz collective who formed at Leeds Conservatoire a few years ago. They've played regular gigs across the city at venues like Brudenell, Hyde Park Book Club, Sela Bar and Casa, as well as appearing on the Welcome To Leeds open air stage at Leeds Jazz Festival 2024. Mixing jazz improvisation with elements from hip hop, flamenco, funk and electronica, this colourful mix of sounds takes inspiration from the likes of Nubya Garcia, Soweto Kinch, Emma Rawicz, and then all the way through to the flamenco jazz of Paco De Lucia via the chaotic genius and energy of Charles Mingus. A perfect combination of styles and influences to open for Amon Ra Collective.

Based in Newcastle and currently touring in promotion of their new album 'Fuck Love', Lovely Assistant grace Leed's Hyde Park Book Club on 19 March.

With captivating musicianship and a sound that is unapologetically her own, Heather Ferrier is a force to be reckoned with. An “engaging talker and magnetic performer” (NARC magazine), the Stockport born accordionist, clog dancer and composer is changing the perceptions of alt-folk on her own terms.
Her latest EP Engine for the Sound creates music that sets the accordion free from its stereotypes, and with an extended line-up of musicians, expresses everything Heather stands for using powerful melodies and jazz-influenced harmony. Bold, passionate and enthralling; the EP has been played on BBC Radio 6 music, and well as being favourably reviewed in local and national publications. When performing, Heather is now joined by guitarist Alasdair Paul (Pons Aelius, Jordan Aikin and Quercus) and drummer Adam Stapleford (Ponyland, Yes! Grasshopper).
On stage, the trio perform music that is an explosion of groove and melody that embellishes Heather's signature alt-folk style. The combination of Ferrier, Paul and Stapleford's medley of influences and genre-bending collaborations transcends the limits of contemporary instrumental folk music, employing Heather's distinct compositional style to create a show with both emotive and upbeat moments.
As well as her solo work, Heather collaborates in the North East with RŪNN, Jon Doran and the Northern Assembly and Jordan Aikin and Quercus.

Beneath the painted hues and infinite prairie skies of Saskatoon -- a city in the heart of Canada -- lies a soulful, creative spirit that proves there’s much more to the so-called ‘fly-over states’ than grassland and grain silos. Katie Tupper, an indie R&B musician, embodies that spirit and is determined to show there’s an entire world of boundary-pushing music at work within the often overlooked region. Tupper's two EPs of heartland soul - 2022's Towards The End, and 2023's Where To Find Me - have amassed 11 million streams world wide, a JUNO Award nomination (2024 Traditional R&B-Soul Recording of the Year), the praise of tastemakers like Zane Lowe, and international radio spins from BBC 6Music (UK), FIP (France), and CBC (Canada). More recently, Tupper’s covers of everything from Hall & Oates to Jazmine Sullivan have gone viral on social media earning nods from superstars like SZA and Joe Jonas.
Katie Tupper returns with "Outside The Gate," a devastatingly beautiful track about facing the reality of how you show up for someone you love. Reflecting on the song, Katie says, "I think more people need to feel allowed to admit that we will never be perfect in our relationships even when they are everything we've wanted." And admit she does, with each poignant repetition of "I think I'm broken," hitting deeper every time, giving a raw and beautiful testament to love’s imperfections.

Tramhaus is the daring postpunk sensation from the restless and ever-innovative city of Rotterdam. In the span of its relatively short existence, Tramhaus has managed to make a name far beyond the borders of their hometown. Marked by their joyous and energetic experience, the band has proven to be able to convey this message both in live and recorded settings. The music of Tramhaus feels like a soundtrack to a vivacious, mysterious, and dangerous story. There is no room to lean back as the band takes you with them in a drag race full of emotions and euphoria driven by streamlined, fiery songs mixed with fragile and abstract tones. This whole spectacle is fueled by the near-symbiotic relationship between the five band members.
Since their formation in 2021, Tramhaus released four 7” vinyl singles and the 12” ‘Rotterdam’ EP. They were shortlisted for a Music Moves Europe Award, featured as Song of the Day at KEXP Seattle, as well as receiving critical acclaim from international media.
They embarked on headlining tours across France, Germany, and the UK, as well as Central- and Northern Europe, Spain & Portugal, and did a successful seven day tour in Japan in November 2023. Tramhaus performed at leading European festivals including Best Kept Secret, Levitation France, Sziget, Colours of Ostrava, Dour, Tremor, Les Vielles Charrues, and showcases ESNS, The Great Escape, MaMa, Tallinn Music Week and Reeperbahn. Recently they performed eight times during SXSW.

Nap Eyes’ metamorphic fifth long-player collects a cache of nine fascinating songs recorded over the four years since Snapshot of a Beginner. The Neon Gate reveals classic touchstones (the uneasy interplay of physics and philosophy, perambulatory meditations, self-interrogating soliloquies, apertures of surreality, video games), but also evidence of divergent impulses toward nonlinear abstraction and longform improvisational composition (resulting in their most discursive, deconstructed, and deliquescent songs to date) and narrative and lyric formality (including adaptations of thorny poems by Alexander Pushkin and W. B. Yeats), imparting the sense that Nap Eyes have transmuted, as has their understanding of what a song is, what it can do, where it might go. (Including color inner sleeve with lyrics.)

Snapshot of a Beginner feels as much a modest masterpiece as [The Go-Betweens’] Spring Hill Fair or [Belle and Sebastian’s] Tigermilk. What sets them apart is the fear and trembling. – Uncut

On her new album, Carnival, Americana/soul singer-songwriter Juliet Lloyd showcases her signature “evocative storytelling and raw honesty” and “powerfully emotive performance from start to finish,” honed over more than two decades. Raised in rural New York in the US, Juliet was a classically trained pianist and jazz trumpet player from an early age before studying songwriting at Berklee College of Music. It wasn’t long before she was a fixture in the Boston singer-songwriter scene, releasing two critically acclaimed albums, touring across the country, and garnering placements on MTV and VH1. Struggling with burnout, Juliet walked away from music completely in 2009 and got a lucrative corporate job. Fast forward ten years, and in the midst of a global pandemic, she returned to songwriting and performing. After winning a string of national songwriting awards and releasing her 2022 EP High Road—hailed as a “top-tier singer/songwriter album”—Juliet returned full force. Since then, she has performed 150+ shows a year, both solo and with her band, at clubs and listening rooms across the US.

Once again channeling the rawness of the North East coast, Pit Pony return with their second album Dead Stars. Set to release on 7 February 2024 via Clue Records / EMI North, the album sees the band meld a myriad of influences from 50s doo-wop to heavy rock while frontwoman Jackie Purver navigates the complexities of modern life. A broader and more ambitious, but yet wholly cohesive follow up to their debut album World To Me, Dead Stars promises to reveal infinitely finer details with each listen.
Fiercely honest, Jackie’s lyricism portrays an intense duality and a vulnerability that is instantly relatable. Turning inwards to explore notions of motherhood, imposter syndrome and getting older, while simultaneously outwards through commentary on the cost of living, polluted water, the constant sell on social media and the ‘off menu’ Starbucks coffee obsession.
With the band citing the recent influences of Blue Weekend and Skinty Fia alongside the likes of Can and the soundtracks of Ennio Moriconne, mastering engineer Christian Wright (Wolf Alice, Fontaines D.C., Pigs x7) proves the perfect fit with Chris McManus (Blank Studios) heading up recording & production. Sonically, Pit Pony remain loyal to their roots, noting the influence of regional titans Nadine Shah and The Futureheads and with the “ENGLISH ACCENT god damn it” reminder on PJ Harvey’s Uh Huh Her in mind, Jackie Purver stays true to her accent.
Dead Stars sees Pit Pony deliver an expanded but yet more balanced and personal conception of their craft. Garth Purver explains that the band were aiming for a more rounded and complete record “that showcased multiple sides to us but hung together as one piece of work rather than a collection of separate tracks.” While Andrew Jones mentions how the band “encouraged each other to pull on those strands and incorporate more of our personal taste in the sound”.

KOYO play Leeds as part of a UK tour in support of their new album, Onism. Supports TBA!
KOYO are a rock band, incorporating elements of alternative, psychedelic and progressive rock. Alumni of Leeds Conservatoire, they are a major factor in the city’s burgeoning music scene.
Based on their live performance they were selected to open the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds festivals. They followed up with performances at Rockaway Beach, Live at Leeds, Ramblin’ Man, Camden Rocks, Sheffield Tramlines, Bingley Weekender and Download.
Their eponymous debut album received outstanding reviews across the music press, making the end of year top album listings in Classic Rock, PROG and Louder than War magazines.
They re-entered the studio with producer Mike Horner (Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand), resulting in standalone single “Before” and their sophomore album, You Said It. The album sustained support in the press and engaged with new fans, receiving airplay on BBC Radio Leeds, Amazing Radio, 6 Music, Radio X and Absolute Radio.
With the lockdowns inhibiting their ability to tour, the band set to work on their third album, titled Onism. The band launched a crowdfunder to raise funds to complete the project. The campaign was successful and selected by Kickstarter as a “Project We Love”, highlighting it as a brilliant example of creativity.
Onism is out now.
“With an awful lot of great music around, it’s easy to get carried away with superlatives, but with Onism, Koyo take us into favourite new (to most) / new favourite band territory— Louder Than War
KOYO are Huw Edwards (lead vocals, guitar), Jacob Price (sampling, synthesisers), Layth Ibrahim (bass) and Tom Higham (drums).

Alternative folk artist Ollie Dixon will be performing live at The Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds on Wednesday, 5th February 2025 with support from Chump and Anneka Shelley
From regularly performing live across the South and South West including headlining for Sofar Sounds and playing a number of the U.K. festivals (inc. Boardmasters, Between The Trees & Oceanfest), Ollie is embarking on a U.K. wide tour in 2025 performing songs from his brand new EP.
This will be Ollie’s first performance for Leeds where he has chosen to play an intimate show at the Hyde Park Book Club.
A genre that Ollie calls "cinematic ambient folk" blending acoustic and electric guitars, drenched in reverb, with drum samples rather than conventional drums, layers of violins and arpeggiated synths.
Daniel Pascoe - BBC Music Introducing in the South West 'Ollie is musical escapism in its purest form. Akin to the likes of Ben Howard, his sea-washed roots play a pivotal part in his melancholy yet atmospheric and soul-bearing storytelling. Without a doubt, one of the South-West’s stand out artists’.

Leeds-based indie-rock quartet Pretend Best Friends release their debut single 'Save Myself,' on 31st January 2025. 'Save Myself' has already been championed by BBC Introducing (York & North Yorkshire) and is the first in a line of releases for early 2025. The bands sound is uplifting, vibrant and every chorus is massive. PBF are heavily influenced by the anthems of 90's Brit-pop but never stray too far from the chaos of the mid-00's New Yorkshire revolution, where most of the band became regulars of the Leeds Music Scene. The band were formed in early 2024, boasting a wealth of experience with members having played in the legendary International Trust and Kleine Schweine.

The Sexy Wild East are a 2 piece British/Canadian electropunk band based in Budapest, Hungary. They have been described as "the angry Pet Shop Boys" and "like Sleaford Mods but shorter". You may recognise frontman Neil Hanson from Leeds punk band Kleine Schweine with whom he toured Europe and played with Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers, Goldblade and many more. Neil is ably assisted by production genius Chris Welch formerly from Yukon, Canada. Now having ditched guitars and drums for laptops and beats, The Sexy Wild East blast hard hitting political electro with an underlying party vibe. Their 3rd album Unfuckinbelievable is pulling in fans worldwide, and onstage they are energetic, fun and totally unmissable.

Paul Morricone is sat, legs crossed, waiting in an airport lounge. Blue brogue shoes, red shirt, a long black coat with the collars up and a small carry-on bag with a colourful Roy Liechtenstein image on the side of it boldly showing the word ‘BOOOOM!!!’. There is something pop art about his ethos. Combining the familiar every day with a vivid presentation and reimagining it. “Not exactly the most convincing luggage to get through security” remarks Paul, “all that’s in there is my orchestra in a box.” He is referring to the backing track player he brings as he makes his way to a couple of solo gigs in Hungary.
“I wanted to turn up to a gig with just a bag” smirks Paul, who has spent the last quarter of a century piling into vans with amps and kit to play diy venues with his cinematic punk outfit The Scaramanga Six. But Paul’s change of approach is not just practical but aesthetic. Freeing himself from the confines of live instruments, he has embraced a different musical palette with lavish instrumentation and arrangements that could never fit on one of those stages.
This parallel solo output has become an opportunity for Paul to flex his mind as a writer, arranger, producer, and performer, working on a widescreen filmic sound to house his singular singing style and baritone voice. “I’m not a producer, I’m a director. Every song is a short film and I’m imagining the score” says Paul when asked how he works. This is a hint at his profession as commercial video director, and it seems he has decided to give himself a new creative brief. “In the noughties, there was a point when you could go into any indie disco and I’d have directed videos for half the records played” he says, referring to his time as a flavour-of-the-month music video director for the likes of Graham Coxon and The Young Knives, “but that feels like a long time ago”.
Growing up in the Somerset seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, Paul only had to look across the water to where his mum and much of his family hailed from in South Wales. “We would go to visit, go to family dos and everyone would be singing passionately, even those who couldn’t sing!” He says. To this day, Paul seems to attribute his love of singing and the art of the crooner to the working men’s clubs of The Valleys. “You learn how to hold a room with your voice, even without any music” he says. “I guess you could say I’m a modern-day crooner, and I don’t feel dressed without a collar” laughs Paul “it takes as much effort to wear a shirt as it does a t-shirt, you just need to know your way around an ironing board.” Indeed, Paul seems well presented, a considered appearance at all times.
With his twin brother Steve, life as primary school kids were a little different to many others. They were the youngest of five brothers with quite a gap to the other three. The home would be strewn with punk, new wave, dub and early electro records of their older brothers. They didn’t understand why the other 8-year-olds at school didn’t know ‘Shot By Both Sides’ by Magazine. This left an indelible mark, and the punk ethos of having a go remains. Through an early love of Madness, both Paul and Steve took up saxophone at school, trained classically, then ditched the sheet music for an array of self-taught instruments in a band together to this very day. The Scaramanga Six are on their eleventh album, but in more recent years Paul has found time to experiment with beats, electronics, and varied approaches to composing with his solo work.
So how does this recent output sound? If you take 2019’s ‘The Dissolving Man’, you can hear songs like ‘Estranged’ in which Tom Robinson of BBC6Music described that “If there’d ever been a dream collaboration between Scott Walker and Massive Attack this is what it might have sounded like…so dense and ambitious: a huge widescreen soundscape where the harmonic surprises never stop coming”. Move onto the second solo album ‘Cruel Designs’ from 2010, and you can hear a more pronounced move towards dark dance, mixing low-fi electronics with moments of easy listening orchestration.
“How I work today is faster, more of a patchwork, plugging in a keyboard, finding a sound then running with it until I have something I can imagine the visuals to” Paul explains, as the new album ‘Go Sanction Yourself’ is nearing completion. “It’s not aimless layering though, there has to be the craft of a song” he insists. The new record takes on a bolder wonky dance feel, doubling up beats with a super-tight live rhythm section of Ant and Mitch, yet still luscious and expansive in its ambitions. “I named the album ‘Go Sanction Yourself’ because that’s exactly what people in our country have been happily doing for the last decade. Through public votes and actions, we find ourselves self-sabotaged, an island increasingly cutting its own nose off to spite its face. People unwittingly approving their own punishment. A nation sanctioning itself” explains Paul.
The tannoy announces the imminent departure of the Budapest flight and Paul stands up to leave. “I hope I don’t make them cry like infants like I did in that anarchist squat in Romania” he remarks, referring to his last gigs where he reduced a room of punks to tears with his rendition of chocolate-box ballad ‘December’, “I had to go over and hug one of them mid-song”. With that, he’s off - with his orchestra in his bag.

Tom Harris is a northern pianist, composer, and educator. They try their best to make interesting work with kind people, and want to share it with as many folks as possible!

Their latest offering takes inspiration from Buddleia - the vibrant purple shrub which thrives in ‘ugly’ places. It’s tough, beautiful, and a reminder that some version of life will always persevere…

Hello reader, Theo Black here, inviting you to ‘things i’ll no longer be doing’ — an ode to my seven years living and making music in Leeds’ creative community.
In 2025, I’ll be moving back to my birthplace of Cornwall to refresh my spirit, reconnect with my coastal roots, and record new music with my band — maybe even an album! This recording is a unique opportunity to document the past year’s work and celebrate the collaborations that have brought it to life during a time of great transition.
So, in the same space where I’ve hosted ‘things i’ve been up to’ over the past three years, I’m putting on a gig to share and experiment with this new music alongside my wonderful band: Felix Bertulis-Webb, Eddie Bowes, and Joe Wilkes. Hopefully, in the process, we can raise some funds to cover the expenses of recording this new music — or at the very least, some petrol money, as Cornwall is quite a way away. You can expect plenty of open tunings I’ve borrowed from Nick Drake, along with stories of missing the sea, loving your friends, and processing change.
I am so excited to announce that the wonderful Gemma Gates will also be supporting us on this gig.
Gemma Gates is an Irish-born singer-songwriter currently based in Leeds, UK. With influences from artists like Laura Marling and the Staves, Gemma's songwriting also explores alternative perspectives on the folk traditions of her birthplace with a focus on rich harmonies and personal lyricism.
Thanks to Hugh Roberts (AKA @misc.etc) for doing the wonderful artwork for this event. He is always a joy to work with and an exceptional artist.
Doors are at 7:30pm and music will start promptly at 8pm. Tickets will only be available on the door so get down early if you want to get in. Can’t wait to see you on January 22nd.
